Bullfighting and Correbous: Hypocrisy in Catalonia

In September 2011, Catalonia held its last bullfighting event, when José Tomás and Serafín Martín fought in Barcelona´s main arena, La Monumental. The banning of bullfighting seemed to be a great win for animal protectors and detractors of the bloodthirsty sport. Fanaticism had been halted, even when sacrificing cultural heritage. However, the Catalans ‘laudable feat turned sour when it was revealed that the horrifying Correbous, an event exclusive to Catalonia was not to be declared illegal, with the Security Administrator for Catalonia arguing that “the animals were not tortured”. What appeared to be a symbolic gesture, turned out to be a sign of the hypocrisy reigning in modern day Catalonia.
